PARLOR TRICKS

Mallorie Freeman

March 10 – April 1, 2012

Mallorie Freeman’s mixed media works and oil paintings have been gaining considerable attention, finding their ways into collections both large and small, private and public. We are now thrilled to bring you Parlor Tricks, Mallorie’s newest solo exhibition following her 2009 sell-out, Spicy Dames and Tales of Mystery. This time around, Mallorie draws inspiration from Victorian-era Spiritualism, the techniques that were used to connect with the afterlife, and the swindlers and charlatans that exploited the trade. Figurative with elements of text from vintage advertisements, Mallorie’s new body of work brings into question what is real and what is trickery.

Coinciding with with the gallery exhibition, selections from Mallorie’s recent portfolio, Lost Track, will be on view at Lava Lounge. Please join the artist, curator, and crew immediately following the gallery reception on March 10th. A swank atmosphere with premier DJs and a sumptuous food and drink menu welcome gallery show goers. Lava Lounge is located at 1307 Auburn Ave., in the historic Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland.

Opening reception at the Euclid Avenue gallery 7-10 PM, Saturday, March 10th. After-party at Lava Lounge 10 PM – ? AM.

LET THE CHIPS FALL

Bob Peck

January 14 – February 5, 2012

All too often these days, we are all looking for the big picture. The answer of all answers, the last puzzle piece that ties it all together and makes confusion become cohesive.  All the dots connected and the image revealed.

Humans crave conclusion.  It lets them know that they have reached their goal, and they can move on to the next quandary.

It has been said that “life imitates art”.  In the abstract art world, the casual viewer and veteran-critic alike are often looking for the sum of the work.  More than they are willing to admit, artists concoct lengthy statements brewed from a sludge of art school rhetoric and sub-culture buzzwords, which in the end, becomes a wordy haze that overshadows the image itself. Smoke and mirrors save the artist for another day.

Bob Peck has fallen victim himself at times, spewing statements about graffiti art and transcendence alike. In the end, though, he is an abstract artist, regardless of the roots that may add that sense of Vice-Magazine-counter-culture-bad-boy-ism to his work.  He is simply a man who loves to paint the designs trapped in his imagination.

If you want to hear a story about Peck’s artwork, ask him face-to-face and he will tell you a good one from his past.  Just do not expect a long and drawn out statement next to each painting in the gallery.

Reception at the Euclid Avenue gallery 7-10 PM, Saturday, January 14. After-party at Lava Lounge 10 PM – ? AM.

BOX OF FUN

New works by Ales BASK Hostomsky

November 19 – December 11, 2011

Cleveland’s favorite culture-spinning Czech vandal, Ales BASK Hostomsky comes back “home” with a portfolio of brand new, never-before seen, mixed-media works. Throwing innocence and purity right into the meat grinder, BASK’s newest series of portraits are both playful at heart, and sinister by nature. Through these difficult times in which we live, BASK shows us that we can still have fun by manipulating our own realities, even while they constantly change around us. A metaphor… that indicates that in this twisted world, we don’t always come out in the same manner in which we came in.

In commemoration of BASK’s fourth solo exhibition at WRG, the artist has partnered with 1xRun to make available a limited edition print titled, Fun Box Toons. This 24 x 24 in. giclee is printed on 330gsm archival cotton paper and is priced at $75 ea. The edition is available for seven days beginning Tuesday, November 15, and can only be purchased direct from 1xRun.

Please join us for the Box of Fun After-Party, hosted at Lava Lounge, immediately following the gallery reception on November 19.  A swank atmosphere with live DJ, sumptuous foods and artfully-crafted drinks welcome gallery show-goers.  An exhibition of new artworks from the portfolio, HEAT by Cleveland-based gallery owner and artist William Rupnik will be on view in the downstairs lounge.  Lava Lounge is located at 1307 Auburn Avenue, in the historic Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland.

PRIVATE EYES

Banksy, Invader, Vhils, Blu, Shepard Fairey

November 5 – November 12, 2011

Debuting at our new Euclid Avenue gallery is Private Eyes, an exhibition of artworks created by some of today’s most celebrated outsider contemporaries, privately sourced and consigned from some of the most significant new collections emerging in our region. Featuring works by Banksy (UK), Invader (France), Vhils (Portugal), Blu (Argentina), and Shepard Fairey (USA), Private Eyes provides the general public with a rare opportunity to readily view and purchase prints and editions by these highly acclaimed international talents; works that are only available on the secondary market.

These artists are part of a changing tide for visual art in the modern age, where “street art” is being embraced and accepted as a viable blue-chip commodity, evident by record sales at such prestigious auction houses Sotheby’s and Bonhams. As such, modern expressionists Banksy and Shepard Fairey are becoming household names, now recognized as pop masters along the likes of such legendary artists Jasper Johns, Roy Lichenstein, Jean-Michael Basquiat, and Andy Warhol. Invader, Blu and Vhils are fast advancing to the same stature, as the interest in “street art” expands well beyond the mediums of paint and canvas.

Collector Dameon Guess is Vice-President of Jakprints, Inc., a global market, full-service, printing firm based here in Cleveland. A life-long art lover, Guess has spent the last decade acquiring artworks that appeal to his to scrupulous eye, incite emotion, portray personal beliefs and/or prove themselves to be worthwhile investments. With consultation and advisory from William Rupnik, Guess has assembled an impressive and diverse portfolio of contemporary works, a small portion of which he has graciously consigned to us for this exhibition.

Please join us for the Private Eyes After-Party, hosted at Lava Lounge, immediately following the gallery reception on November 5. A swank atmosphere with live DJ, sumptuous foods and artfully-crafted drinks welcome gallery show-goers. An exhibition of new artworks from the portfolio, “Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood?” by Cleveland-based artist Ryan Jaenke will be on view in the downstairs lounge. Lava Lounge is located at 1307 Auburn Avenue, in the historic Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland.
